TIL the author J.D. Salinger was a Sergeant in the US Fourth Infantry Division in WWII. He landed in the second wave at Utah Beach on D-Day, carrying a draft of "The Catcher in the Rye" with him there and through several battles, and at the liberation of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
