TIL that Marvel, DC, and other major comic book publishers adopted the "Comics Code" in 1954. Under the Code, criminals could not be depicted sympathetically, and police, judges, and government officials could not be shown as corrupt. The code was revised over time and was abandoned in the 2000s.
