TIL that the Chesapeake and Delaware canal reduces 300 miles for ships going from Baltimore to Philadelphia. Without it, ships would need to travel to Virginia Beach and then back up to access Baltimore. It also accounts for 40% of the traffic at the Port of Baltimore.
