TIL that in August of 1849, Pope Pius IX went aboard the USS Constitution while it was in port at the Italian city of Gaeta. Because U.S Navy ships posses extraterritoriality, this was technically the first papal visit to U.S soil, 116 years before Pope Paul VI would visit New York City in 1965.
