TIL on 9/11 one stairwell within the South Tower remained accessible after impact. Obscured by smoke and fire, most above the impact zone believed the stairs destroyed and headed to the roof hoping for a helicopter rescue. Only four people among them realized the stairs were accessible and escaped.
