TIL Sonic 2's story originally revolved around time travel. Emerald Hill Zone was supposed to be the “present” version, while Mystic Cave was the ruined present, Hill Top was the past variation, and the Chemical Plant was the future. This concept was used in a different manner for Sonic CD.
