TIL that in 1905, Chelsea FC put two small boys behind their goalkeeper, William "Fatty" Foulke, in order to accentuate Foulke's size (1.93m, 152kg) and put off opposing attackers. The boys would sometimes run and return the ball when it went out of play. By accident, ballboys came into being.
