TIL about Akrotiri, an ancient city on the Greek island of Santorini. The city was buried under falling ash 3600 years ago after a massive volcanic explosion and is now the most commonly cited origin of the legend of Atlantis. Unlike the legend, Akrotiri was evacuated with little to no loss of life.
