TIL about the Mirlo rescue. In 1918, an U-Boat attacked a British cargo ship off the NC coast. The ship blew up, spilling oil onto the ocean which caught on fire. The US Lifesaving Service sailed through the fire 4 times to rescue 42 of the 51 aboard.
