TIL that, with the German Sixth Army hopelessly surrounded in Stalingrad in 1943, Hitler promoted their commander Friedrich Paulus to field marshal. There was no precedent of a German field marshal surrendering; Hitler had effectively ordered Paulus to commit suicide.
