TIL that black/melanistic squirrels are extremely rare genetic morphs (1 in ~10,000 individuals) outside of Canada. Living in Canada and seeing black coats on many squirrels (in Ontario, nearly all of them), I've grown up thinking melanism in squirrels was an extremely common phenotype.
