TIL Dresden, Germany adopted a “Pay as you throw” (PAYT) system of garbage disposal. Since 1994, per capita waste generation in Dresden has dropped over 50% from 305kg to 143kg despite increases in income and consumption. The difference is accounted for by compost, recycling, and reusing.
