TIL Leif Erikson may not have even been the first Norsemen to discover the Americas. In 986, Bjarni Herjolfsson sighted the mainland while trying to sail to Greenland. He decided to not make landfall, and later sagas would not include him, giving most, if not all, of the credit to Leif.
