TIL That in July of 2000, the Taliban banned growing Poppies in Afghanistan, and succeeded in reducing production by 99%. This success was short lived however, ending when the Taliban was overthrown by the United States. Afghanistan poppies now account for roughly 90% of the global heroin trade.
