TIL in 2007 a Cherokee council voted 'overwhelmingly' to strip 2,800 people of tribal citizenship, defining citizenship as 'by blood'. After a judgment in 2017 the Tribe began accepting and processing applications for citizenship for the descendents of Freedmen.
