TIL in 1917, Salvation Army volunteers provided supplies and baked goods to American soldiers. The women fried doughnuts in the soldiers' helmets and were known as "Doughnut Lassies" popularizing doughnuts in the USA. National Doughnut Day is now celebrated on the first Friday of June every year.
