TIL that many popular sites in New York City, like Washington Square Park, Madison Square Park, Bryant Park, and Union Square Park, used to be cemeteries. Washington Square Park alone contains over 20,000 bodies. Most of these cemeteries closed in the 1800’s, and the parks were built right on top.
