TIL of Japan’s Unit 731, which committed some of the most terrible war crimes in World War II, including human vivisections, innoculation of diseases, and exposure to radiation and poison gas to thousands of innocent Chinese and Russians. These crimes are still denied by the Japanese people today.

TIL that Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been involved in a "Cola War" since the 1970s. It came to a head during Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, where Coca-Cola's HQ is, when Pepsi was one of the main sponsors and ran a campaign with the slogan "Hey Atlanta, Thanks for Hosting. We'll Bring the Drinks."

TIL That most paper sizes are rectangular (A series) is because it is made with a special mathematical property. If you cut it in half on the long side you get two rectangles that are smaller versions of the original.

TIL: The first-ever solar-powered satellite, Vanguard 1, is "the oldest human-made object still in orbit" (plus some of its launch rocket). Launched in 1958, it stopped talking in 1964 but continues orbiting. The three sats older than it (Sputniks 1 & 2, Explorer 1) are no longer in orbit.

TiL jazz musician Lester Young is said to have popularized the use of the word "cool" to mean something fashionable. He also coined the term "bread" as slang for money, often asking "How does the bread smell?" when asking how much a gig was going to pay.
