TIL a day before Elvis Presley died on 16 August 1977, Jerry Ehman of Ohio State University detected an unusually strong signal from space. Instead of the typical random numbers, there was a stream 30 times louder than the background buzz of deep space. Ehman was so amazed he wrote the word "wow!"
