TIL that New Zealand was one of the colonies asked to join in the creation of the Commonwealth of Australia. New Zealand did not join in part due to fears of discrimination against the Māori people. In response, in 1902 Australia gave Māoris the right to vote, 65 years before the Aboriginal people.
