TIL in 1963 a gem heist occurred in the US every 32 seconds on average which totaled $41 million worth of insured precious and semiprecious stones. In the mid-1960s, an estimated 3.5 million diamonds of one third of a carat or more were sold annually in the US which was "well short of demand."
