TIL that Szechuan Sauce comes from the Asian Sichuan peppercorn which was banned in the US from 1968 to 2005 because it carried canker bacteria. The FDA lifted the ban provided that the peppercorns were heated to to kill any bacteria before import. The bacteria was only harmful to other crops.
