TIL about the St. Patrick's Battalion, a unit in the Mexican American war on the Mexican side. Made up largely of Irish Catholics, it contained a number of other Catholics from around Europe, and elsewhere, as well. Led by Irishman John Riley, the unit had ~700 men at its height.
