TIL that the word RATIO is semantically related to the word RATIOnal, so an irRATIOnal number is a number that cannot be expressed as a RATIO of two integers. (Sorry for the reworded repost. My last post had the etymology wrong, but apparently it's worth reposting because it helped a lot of people!)
