TIL after landing outside Syracuse in 415 BCE, the Athenian army set up a fortified camp & constructed a wall (often called “the Circle”) meant to cut Syracuse off from the rest of Sicily. The Syracusans countered by erecting their own series of counter‐walls, stopping Athens’ land blockade.
