TIL that, in 1805, Carl Friedrich Gauss had actually invented Fast Fourier Transform even before Fourier Transform itself but it was forgotten because he didn't publish it. It was re-invented about 160 years later by James Cooley & John Tukey, in a bid to detect nuclear bomb testing underground.
