TIL in 1791 an English ship found what is now the Chatham Islands which were inhabited by a hunter gatherer group known as the Moriori. Upon hearing of these nearby Islands, Māori from New Zealand commandeered a ship, invaded the Chatham Islands, committed genocide, and enslaved the survivors.
