TIL In 1970s, before Studio Ghibli had been founded, Miyazaki wanted to make an animated version of Pippi Longstocking. He showed her many images but the author flatly refused. Miyazaki did end up using his material to create Panda! Go, Panda! (link to images of Pippi's preproduction in comments)
