TIL that, in 1941, when Cernauti mayor Traian Popovici was told that the Jews in his city were going to be deported, he argued against it and was initially allowed to exempt 200 Jews. However, he argued for more and was thus ultimately able to get 20,000 Jews exempted from deportation.
