TIL the English word “warranty” was borrowed from French, then after the French word evolved (replacing ‘w’ with 'g’) it was borrowed again as the word “guarantee”. Thus the same word was borrowed twice and given different meanings.

QJnOM TIL that The Netherlands (where I live) has two old Volcano’s. One of which they recently found (not this one). Never imagined we’d have Volcano’s here, and never learned that in school, although it makes perfect sense of course. Thought it was pretty cool to have volcano’s.
QYlM TIL when Han Solo said he did the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs he was not trying to describe how fast his ship was going. Instead he was bragging that he had done a shorter route of the Kessel Run. He did this by going closer to a black hole than most dared to go.

e0my4 TIL there’s a laser procedure which breaks up brown eye pigment (melanin) in the iris. It effectively changes one’s eye color from brown to blue, since blue eyes exist under all brown eyes.
4kRlg TIL: 1) The Latin word for "ants" is "formica". 2) Formic acid is produced by ants. 3) Engineers invented a plastic laminate to replace mica as an electrical insulation and named it Formica ("for mica", get it? ). 4) Despite its name, Formica is not made with formic acid. Whew!
