TIL that the guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier marches 21 paces north, turns to the east for 21 seconds, turns north for 21 seconds, and marches 21 paces south to repeat. This pattern is a respectfully silent version of the military’s highest funerary salute– the 21-gun salute.
