TIL of Alfred Holmes, one of Gibraltar's "Officers-in-Charge of the Apes." From 1913 to 1991, these soldiers cared for Gibraltar's macaque population. Holmes fed, nursed, and even trained them. Using eye signals and subtle head movements, he stopped the macaques from taking food offered by tourists.
