TIL Brazilians primarily spoke their native Tupi language up to the mid 18th century because Jesuit missionaries encouraged the natives to keep their mother tongue and enforced Europeans to learn it. However, in 1759 the Jesuits were expelled by the Prime Minister and Tupi quickly went extinct.
