xV59D TIL that Samuel McCulloch, a freed slave, was the first Texian soldier to be wounded during the Texas Revolution, in 1835. A law later prohibited freed slaves from residing in the Republic of Texas, but specifically excluded McCulloch, his family, and his descendants in recognition of his service.
d8oR8 TIL that when A Bug's Life was released in 1998 the rhinoceros beetle Dim was not based on any known species. Eight years later a Peruvian rhinoceros beetle was discovered with a very similar horn. Such discoveries of "fictional" creatures later revealed to be real have been dubbed "the Dim Effect".
