TIL during the Vietnam War, the U.S. conducted Operation Popeye which involved a "cloud-seeding" mission to stimulate clouds in Vietnam and extend the monsoon season. It was later declassified in 1974, and the United States' involvement in this operation became public knowledge

Z80AR TIL that a man named Jeremy Moody drowned at a lifeguard party in New Orleans. The party was in celebration of a year with no drowning incidents. There were around 100 lifeguards in attendance at this party with 4 actively on duty.
8baL TIL Of the Amber Room which was a world-famous chamber decorated in amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors. At one point considered the eighth wonder of the world the entire room went missing during WW2.
OaDY TIL that in 1917 a man named H.L. Mencken, in an effort to prove the gullibility of Americans, published a completely fabricated history of the invention of the bathtub, using random facts, dates, and names. Even today, some of the facts from his story are cited in publications.
rRQa1 TIL that the Royal Navy made a daily issue of rum to its sailors until 31 Jul 1970. The issue was a tot, "only" 1/8 of a pint of rum, daily and it was mixed with water to make "grog" to make it palatable. Tots are still issued on special occasions, such as the Queen's Jubilees and Royal births.
R5xw TIL on the Indonesian island Tana Toraja, if a baby dies before he starts teething, the family cuts a hole in a tree and places the dead child inside. The tree regrows around the baby and absorbs it.
