TIL that on 18 December 1944, Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet encountered a powerful Pacific Typhoon east of the Philippines. Three destroyers were sunk, 146 planes destroyed, 27 ships damaged, and 790 sailors killed; it remains the worst natural disaster in U.S. Navy history.
