TIL the House of Grimaldi has ruled Monaco since 1297. By law the reigning Prince or Princess must bear the surname of Grimaldi and until 2002 a treaty between Monaco and France stated that if the reigning Prince failed to leave dynastic offspring, sovereignty would revert to France.
