TIL about Niihau, Hawaii's 'Forbidden Island'. It is closed to outsiders. Seen from Kauai's western shore, Niihau appears almost ethereal on the horizon. The island is privately owned, a haven for Niihau natives, who can have no contact with tourists, and a site for US military testing.
