TIL that after the initial discovery of penicillin, scientists scrambled for a fungus that could efficiently produce it. Mary Hunt, a lab assistant, came across a cantaloupe with a golden mold, P. chrysogenum. All penicillin is effectively descended from Mary Hunt’s cantaloupe.
