TIL a month before FDR’s taking of office, a mentally ill man attempted to assassinate Roosevelt, instead killing Anton Cermak, the Mayor of Chicago, and wounding four others. On his ride to the hospital, Cermak allegedly said to FDR, “I’m glad it was me instead of you.”
