TIL during World War II, Newfoundland was still part of Great Britain and not Canada. In 1941 the U.S. built four military bases in Newfoundland which brought money, entertainment and U.S. products to the area. As a result, a 1947 poll said that 80% of Newfoundland wanted to become Americans.
