TIL that in 1902 a volcanic eruption flattened an entire city, killing everyone but two people. One was a prisoner who only survived because he’d stabbed a policeman and had been put into solitary confinement. He was horribly burned, was pardoned of his crimes and became a circus attraction.

Not wanting to double it to 10¢, Coke asked the US to mint a 7.5¢ coin, but were denied. So it made every 9th bottle in the machines empty, making the avg effective price 5.6¢.
