TIL that Russia and the US are only 2.4 mi (3.9 km) apart due to the positioning of the Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait. Diomede (US) and Big Diomede (Russia) are in view of each other, and in winter it’s technically possible to walk across the ice from US to Russia.
