TIL In the 1850s the timber pirates of the Great Lakes stole lumber, burned ships, and openly threatened federal agents; killing atleast one. On May 6th 1853 the Buffalo, a lumber steam ship, rammed the USS Michigan but no charges were levied against the ship captain or owner.
