TIL Before Memorial Day was made a Federal holiday in 1971, it was mostly known as Decoration Day. It was a traditional day of remembrance for fallen soldiers and family mostly in Appalachian Mountains of the southern US. It also has roots in Liberian, Welsh, Irish and Mormon cultures and religions.
