TIL only people who were of Genghis Kahn's royal lineage were allowed to rule Mongolia. In 1578 Altan Khan bestowed the first title of "Dalai Lama" upon Sonam Gyatsho who in return proclaimed Altan to be the reincarnation of Kublai Khan giving Atlan legitimacy to rule over the Mongols.
