TIL there is something called "Sazae-san syndrome" in Japan. Every Sunday, at 6:30pm, an animated show called Sazae-san airs, and when it ends many Japanese people are struck with feelings of melancholy because they are reminded the weekend is coming to an end.

Til that: In the Middle ages, the "shrew's fiddle" was used to punish people who were caught bickering. The "Double Fiddle" attached to two people together face-to-face, forcing them to talk to each other. They were not released until the argument had been resolved.

TIL: In its January 1988 issue, Cosmopolitan ran a feature claiming that women had almost no reason to worry about contracting HIV. The piece claimed that unprotected sex with an HIV-positive man did not put women at risk of infection and went on to state that “most heterosexuals are not at risk”.

TIL of Eugène-François Vidocq, a formal criminal who founded the first Private Detective agency in 1833. He mostly hired ex-convicts. His innovations include taking a plaster cast of a shoe print and introducing undercover work. He claims to have never informed on someone who stole for real need.
