TIL that upon reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1805, Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery held a vote to decide where to set up their camp. This vote included a black man (Clark’s slave, York) and a Native American woman (Sacagawea), with everyone’s vote having equal weight.
