TIL that one of the rarest coins is the 1933 Double Eagle gold coin. 433,000 minted but subsequently melted down. Officially 2 were kept but a small handful aside from that we’re smuggled out of the mint before they were melted down. One of those coins sold in 2002 for $7,590,020.
