TIL G.I. stood for General Issue, or Government Issue, and that soldiers sardonically referred to themselves as “G.I.” = “General Issue” items, all equally as disposable as helmets, boots, tents, canteens, rifles, jeeps, trucks, tanks, and combat aircraft.
